Does life insurance cover coronavirus (COVID-19)?
As always, you are covered for death by any cause (including coronavirus) from day one with our Family Life policy (except if death is the result of suicide or self-inflicted injury in the first 12 months). With our Guaranteed policy, you are fully covered for death by any cause (including coronavirus) after 24 months. You are covered for accidental death from day one. This applies to both existing and new customers.
I tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) — can I still take out a life insurance policy?
Smart Guaranteed: Yes, you can still take out cover if you have contracted coronavirus. It will not affect the cost of your policy. Any UK resident aged 30 to 80 is guaranteed acceptance with our Smart Guaranteed policy, regardless of your health or medical circumstances.
Smart Family Life: We do not request a medical examination for any of our policies, but we will ask some health and lifestyle questions during the Family Life application process. If you are applying for our Smart Family Life policy, you will be asked questions relating to coronavirus. Your responses to these health and lifestyle questions will determine if we can accept your application.
Will the cost of my insurance increase as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19)?
No, there are no changes to how we work out the cost of a policy. If you’re applying for our Smart Family Life policy, we will use your chosen benefit amount, the premium type you have selected, your age and some health and lifestyle questions to determine the cost of your monthly payments.
For Smart Guaranteed insurance, your age and benefit amount and whether you have chosen a single or joint policy will be used to determine the cost - no health questions or medical needed. If you’re an existing Smart customer, your premiums will not change as a result of coronavirus.
What happens if I miss a payment on my life insurance policy?
If you miss two consecutive monthly payments, your policy will be cancelled. If you’re concerned that you might have trouble keeping up with your monthly payments due to current circumstances, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Can I apply for more cover?
We offer flexibility to our customers and in some cases, you can apply to add more cover to your policy. Depending on your circumstances, you could apply to increase the amount paid out if it is not already at the maximum amount. At any point, you can apply to have the cost of your monthly payments reduced or increased by reducing or increasing your benefit amount. With our Family Life policy, you have the option of applying to add extras like Children’s Cover and Critical Illness Cover.
Does it take longer to process claims because of coronavirus (COVID-19)?
Life insurance is there to protect your loved ones if you pass away, and we understand that there is sometimes a sense of urgency around receiving the payout. That’s why we try to process claims within days of receiving them. Currently, we aren’t experiencing any delays in processing claims.
